Sciatica
Morning chaps if any of you are sufferers what have yi found that eases it? I love swimming (breaststoke) but I get the feeling it doesn't do it much good. I'm guessing walking long distance makes it worse too? Doctors and physios I have found to be pretty useless. Am considering acupuncture.

Regards

The worst pain ever. Been told I've got herniated discs and all that goes with it basically back is worn out. I've tried acupuncture, physio, surgery where they release some of the pathway the nerve travels through. Still have it but now pumped full of painkillers. 30mgs of Zomorph twice a day, that's a slow release capsule of morphine, gabapentin 600mgs twice a day, neuropathic painkiller.

Re: Sciatica
so it turns out the sciatic pain was due to 2 (two) herniated discs (L4/5 & LS/S1)
steroid injections yesterday and if they don't work then its surgery.

had to pay for the injections privately as the NHS would have been about 6 months.

fingers crossed the injections do their job.

Re: Sciatica
back at the osteopath today and i'll see what she says. she's done acupuncture a few times now and that speeds up the recovery process with my lower back - but this is my first experience of pain down the sciatic nerve.

from what i read, mild cases last 4-8wks and this is week number 4 for me. having read below i should be than king my lucky stars.

being seated all day is a disease!!

In reading about everyone else's experiences, I think I got off lightly.

Re: Sciatica
Had about ten sessions of facial acupuncture years ago, electric current was passed down the needles, did nothing. It has been proven as a Placebo since, although can still work for those gullible types it seems.

Had herniated disc with sciatica followed by degenerative disc disease of the lower back for approx 30 years.

Had Physio in hospital for six months once a week to begin, which made it worse. They said they couldn't do anymore after that, it decided to right itself eventually on its own after another few months.

It has flared up every year or so ever since. Sometimes goes with some painkillers, but rarely. A few years ago I hadn't had a flare up for a couple of years and you tend to forget, then BAM I lifted something heavy and ended up sleeping on the wood floor for 6 months. Thought I was going to end up a cripple at one stage, started getting depressed feeling sorry for myself and hit the red wine bottle which I neede just to get some sleep, trouble is alcohol is a stimulant so no decent sleep.

After it righted itself again I did some research and find that core exercises are the only thing that helps, although I suffer with tight calfs and hamstrings so do stretches for them as well. Has helped keep it at bay for a few years so far.

Everyone has different problems of course, turns out my mothers back crumbled in two places in her late 70s and now is house bound in constant pain. Had epidurals every few months but they said she shouldn't have anymore so only thing that numbs the pain is morphine taken orally and morphine back patches at night, I recommend these to anyone who is in similar pain and has my utmost sympathy.

Good luck Bruno, sadly it will be with you for life and must be managed.
